In January, 2014, two officers in a suburb outside Los Angeles were acquitted of all charges related to the death of Kelly Thomas, a homeless schizophrenic man whose final words included 'I'm sorry' and 'I can't breathe' In February, 2014, a protest happened on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Filmmaker Dylan Avery went there to document the rally, and ended up spending the next year and a half of his life covering the topic of police brutality and injustice, with production taking an unexpected turn in August, 2014 after the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the unexpected introduction of an ex-cop turned activist named Alex Salazar. A DJ beaten by off duty DEA agents, a man arrested for filming a police officer, and several families of victims in Los Angeles fight for justice over the course of 2014 and 2015 with Ferguson and Baltimore as a backdrop.
